No user accounts display when XP starts

For last 2 years, home edition has displayed 4 user accounts when XP starts.
All of a sudden, the blue screen appears asking me to select an account but
no account icons display. Have tried safe mode but none show. If I can't get
past that screen, I can't access anything on computer.

Here's a post from Microsoft that exactly describes the problem (except no
accounts display in my case) but if no account icons display, I'm dead unless
you have some trick to getting me past the blue screen. My ID account was set
as the Administrator but now wonder if it's been reset to a regular account.

SUMMARY
When you start a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer in Safe mode, if you
have the Welcome Screen enabled, not all user accounts are displayed on the
Welcome Screen.
MORE INFORMATION
User accounts that do not have administrative privileges are not listed on
the Welcome Screen. Users with Standard or Limited account types do not have
access to start in Safe mode.

Log on with an account that has administrative rights, perform the necessary
maintenance. After that, start the computer normally, not in Safe mode, and
you can log on with any user account.

Can you provide the post #?
Only Administrator account should be displayed in Safe Mode. that is correct
and what you posted.

Have you tried to force it to display Admin Accounts by pressing ctrl+alt+del
a couple times?

Hi Dennis - many thanks for the reply. Ctl-Alt-Del called 2 times brings up
my daughter's account but that account's never been marked as an
administrator before. I may have to ask her to put in every password she's
ever known 'cause something got switched yesterday. The Microsoft article
copied is under KB292742.

I don't know how to say this for sure.

When her account came up, was it the only account listed?

Only Administrator" should also show have showed up .
Is the field for the Username open. Can you erase and then type over here
name?
Enter your login and password

When her account shows up, try ctrl+alt+esc again. Maybe the Administrator
accounts will show up now. Accounts plural. A "Hidden Administrator" Account
and any other Account with Admin privileges which would include yours. If
your user account shows up, it is your regular user account and password.


For her account, leave password blank if you don't think she had one.
Or if she has one, enter it. but if she has "limited" account this won't
help much.

Under Control Panel, User Account, change the way users logon or logoff, do
you have 1) Enable Fast user switching and 2) Use Welcome Screen checked?
