recently had to install new hard drive. running xp pro. after loading xp
have not had any usb ports. go to device manager and nothing shows up for
usb's. reloaded, rebooted, etc but to no avail. plug and play does not find
anything. Saw somewhere in help and support this is a problem and microsoft
is researching. No fixes. anybody have similar problem and fix.

Boot into your BIOS and make sure the usb port is activated.
One other question, do you have Service Pack 2 installed ?

Thanks JerryM, that worked, I don't know how this changed because it worked
previously, should have thought of checking this. No, I have not gone to
sp2.
