No Tif preview in XP Explorer when file is saved by Photoshop CS

K

kristin

Hoping for some help. Have googled this but not finding any real fits.

Tifs that I have saved in PhotoShop CS have no preview available in Windows
Explorer. This has just rrecently changed...Size of the tif seems to make no
difference seems to make no difference.

Tried using tools to change the preferences from PhotoShop to another
graphics program...to no avail.

When I save the same file as a tif with another program, for example Corel
PhotoPaint, the preview WILL be displayed in Windows Explorer.

Thanks for your help,
kristin

Wes,

Thanks for your response and for the comprhensive list you've put together.
However, no luck. I am just about to give up and purchase Breeze Browser.
;-(

thank you, kristin

ps When I hover the mouse over any tiff file...not just those that do not
preview, not just those saved in Photoshop CS, the text now reads
correctly..before it read "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" even tho it
had been associated with PS in tools. ALSO...those files thaat I have
recently save...the files that have no visual previe, they also do not have
a summare. IE "no summary available"..so no pixel dimensions....etc.

Hi kristin,

The old spiel chucker failed, huh? ;-)

Type or paste the following line into the Start | Run box and click OK...

regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

You should get a popup message stating whether it worked.

Microsoft Office Document Imaging, Office may have hijacked the file
association.

Just curious, why are you saving picture files as .tifs?

I found one .tif file on my machine. C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt\MS.TIF I suspect that it's from MS Office,
it's the Office puzzle logo.

I was curious, so I did a Save As on a 28.3 KB .jpg file and saved it as a
..tif. The .tif files is 288 KB. Both images are 553 pixels by 431 pixels
and 72 by 72 dpi. I see absolutely no reason for .tif files. The .jpg
version actually looks like a better picture. There is some text in the
picture and it is clearer in the .jpg version. No wonder I only have only
one .tif file. I could see a thumbnail of the converted .tif file in the
tasks pane. The file type for .tif shows up as TIF Image.

I just noticed that when viewing a .tif in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
there is an Annotation toolbar, not seen with other image types. Big deal,
you can use MS Paint to do that.

Wes....

What does the dll that you posted do? I have not done that yet because:

I found that if I UNCHECKED a setting "save image pyramid" in the SAVE
dialogue of Photoshop, I can then view the images in Windows Explorer. I am
trying to work out exactly what purpose the image pyramid serves. I guess it
has something to do with resolution independence:

"Resolution independent means that the image data is organized inside the
file in a way that makes it possible to retrieve image data at various
resolution levels in an efficient manner."

To answer your question about why I am saving as tifs. They are layered
files; I want to retain the ability to edit the layers.

Thank you for all of this research...trying to get a handle on this...seems
there might be a bit of a struggle between Microsoft and Adobe on file
handling...Will keep you posted.

Hi kristin,
What does the dll that you posted do?

shimgvw.dll? Shimgvw.dll is the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as stated in
my post. Shimgvw.dll is also responsible for the thumbnail view in Windows
Explorer.

When you open an image file (double clicking a file or right clicking and
selecting Preview) in Windows XP the default action is to preview it using
the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer no matter what other applications are
installed.

If shimgvw.dll is not registered properly in the registry Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer will not work for Previewing picture files and thumbnails
will not display in Windows Explorer or they will be displayed as generic
icons, also changing user account and desktop background pictures may be a
problem.

It looks like Photoshop is the problem, not Windows.

I see why you want the tiff files. I am a pedestrian when it comes to
picture files. I look at them and use the very powerful MS Paint to edit
them. ;-)
