no system sounds, gray play button in sound/audio device propertie

I'm posting this info as it has taken me 2 weeks and many, many reinstalls,
searches, etc to find a solution!

I had malware which somehow caused an error with my sound properties, ie, no
startup/shutdown, no system sounds, no email notification sound but I had no
problem playing WMP files and with my dictation/transcription (.dct) files.
I finally found a solution!

I never thought to look for that type of help (Restore Volume/Net Icon to
Notification Area) but the tweat helped me!!

I hope this helps someone else in a more timely fashion than for me!!!
