no speech recognition in Home Premium?

Hello,

which versions of Vista have the speech recognition engine included?

For now I've seen it in Ultimate, but a while ago I set up an HP
laptop that had Home Professional preinstalled, and had to find
there was only text-to-speech available and no speech recognition.

=> Is speech reco only available in Ultimate (and maybe
Business/Enterprise)?

(Yes I already tried googling, but even on Microsoft pages I could
not find anything about which features exactly are included in which
Vista versions...)

thanks,
- Jan

I haven't seen all versions to verify but this page:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/3ceb9d4e-e8d2-499c-b860-6a6619580bb41033.mspx
says it is in all versions of Vistas.

contributions from people who actually worked on the product, this is the
definitive resource to learn about Windows Vista. The Windows Vista Product
Guide is available in the new Microsoft Word 2007 or the new XPS format."

Many thanks, very good doc! But hmm well then this is strange.
Perhaps speech reco has been removed from HP's 'recovery' install image.

The Vista Home Premium in question is Finnish, but that should not
matter. (?)

At least, 3.19 in the above comprehensive doc does say "Speech
Recognition is available in English (U.S.), English (U.K.), German
(Germany), French (France), Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Chinese
(Traditional), and Chinese (Simplified)."

So I'd figure that speech reco processes those languages. The doc
does not say speech reco is only available for English, German etc
Vista versions.

So even in Finnish Vista Home Premium there should still be
recognition of all the languages? Or do I read the doc wrong?

many thanks,
- Jan

Yes, Vista Speech Recognition is available in all versions, BUT the language
used for Vista Speech Recognition has to be the same as the UI language of
the OS, so there won't be Speech Recognition available in Finnish versions
of Vista {since we don't have a Finnish Speech Recognition engine}.

Dave I don't think this is true any more.

If you run Windows Update, you can choose the
optional language packs. You then can go into Control
Panel --> Ease of Access --> Speech Recognition Options --> Advanced Speech
Options

Then Select the Language of Speech Recognition Engine you want to use. I'm
using US Version of Windows Ultimate and I download all the optional language
packs and now have options to use them as my SR engine.

Not true, Speech Recognition is only available in versions of Vista with the
following languages
English (U.S.), English (U.K.), German (Germany), French
(France), Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Chinese (Traditional), and Chinese
(Simplified)

If you have one of these versions, it is true that you can download language
packs for any of the other languages mentioned. If you on the other hand
have a finnish or danish(in my case) version you are out of luck. Guess I
should have bought an english version....

I have a problem with the Speech Recognition on my Vista computer.

When I click on any of the links in "Speech Recognition" form the Control
Panel" (Like: "Setup microphone" or "Start speech recognition"), I get this
error-message:

"The referenced collection is not installed on your system"

What can I do to fix it?

I would really appreciate an answer and help on this...
