No sounds

I cannot hear my default sounds in windows. I currently have windows xp.
When I go into control panel, sounds, i see them there and can play them but
when Im using the computer i cannot hear them, for example when i log off Im
supposed to hear the log off sound but cannot. Can anyone help?

Thanks alot my sounds are restored. I ran regedit and it had something to do
with the weather channel which i deleted and now my sounds are back on.
