lost system sounds!

On my PC I have two users set up, and on the user that I use I have lost my
system sounds! New email messages, log in and out, start up, all these sounds
are gone. I can play them when I go to the sounds option in Control Panel and
the sound scheme is Windows XP Default, but I don't hear them when I'm
running my normal programs. I can also play CDs and hear other audio sounds,
like Windows Media Player streaming audio, etc. The other user gets all the
system sounds like normal, but for some reason this user has totally lost
them. Can anyone help me restore them? Thank you!

Go in to Sounds, select what's wanted, then save in a new, differently
named, scheme. I lost all mine and did this.

I tried that, but it didn't work. Any other ideas?

Thanks (By the way, other sounds work, too like Quicken sounds...)

Do you have tweakui installed? If so run it and expand the General tab.
Make sure the first entry in the list on the right hand side has a
check mark in it, "Beep on Errors." If this is not activated the system
sounds are lost. If you don't have tweakui installed download it from
here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

I downloaded that program, and the Beep on Errors checkbox is checked. Still
no windows sounds. All other program sounds work fine. All sounds work fine
under a different log in. Is there some other setting for this? Very vexing...

Try unchecking, then checking the box. Another option is to create a
new user profile and copy over data from the old one.
