no sound

hi all i hope someone can help me out.I have windows xp
running on a computer about 14 months old and i have
suddenly lost all sound.When i turn the volume up on the
speakers i hear the background hiss but nothing else.I do
not know what else to try is there any one out there who
can help me solve this.Please let me know Many thanks

You may have accidentally killed the sound driver with a

windows update or Service Pack update. I have had this
happen with several of the Dell Optiplex GX150's we
have. If you know your sound card manufacturer you
should be able to go to their website and download a
hotfix or patch or updated driver. Also, your PC
manufacturer's website may have an update or fix as
well. Check there too!
