No Sound

Hi All - My speakers quit working - I went through all the troubleshooting
sequences - no help - so maybe someone out there can help me.

I am using Windows XP Home Edition - Service Pack 2 has been installed. I
went to devices - C Media AC97 Audio Device "cannot start" (Code 10). I
tried uninstalling and reinstalling , and unplugging and replugging in the
speaker cord- no use - still no speakers. I can unplugg the speakers from
the tower and hear crackling sounds from the speakers when the connector is
just barely touching the tower, but when I connect it securely, no sound.

Can anybody help???? Please? Thanks !!

Try a System Restore to a date before your problem started.
Click Start, Help and Support, then under Pick A Task select Undo changes
to your computer with System Restore.

probably a hardware conflict

have you added any hardware or made any changes in the bios?

Thanks for your reply, Ronk, but I'm kinda afraid to do a system restore. I
had a virus that I couldn't get rid of, but I finally did and I don't want it
back. Will a system restore put the virus back on the machine? Oh, now my
computer is telling me I have no sound device - didn't do anything, how do I
get one? Thanks again.

I have experienced problems by a sound driver offered for download by
Microsoft Update - I rolled back the driver and everything was OK. In view
of that I excluded the driver from any future MS updates.

I have had exactly the same happen to me, ever since I had to wipe my hard
drive and reinstall Windows XP after a particularly nasty virus. I am
beginning to think that it is the sound card that is at fault - especially as
we had a violent thunderstorm soon after whilst the PC was on, and there
appeared to be a power surge.
I have tried rolling back, uninstalling and reinstalling the hardware and
checking the drivers with no luck. Still this Code 10 thingy.
I have had the warning 'No device' appear on Device Manager, but I have at
least sorted that. The AC97 device is back but I still have no sound.
I have done the diagnostics on DirectX and under Sound1 and Sound 2 there is
an error message with an error code full of zeros.
I'm stuck now.
Help!!

I'm having the same issue with my sound, please if anyone figures this out
let me know something. My windows was hanging and would not go into the
desktop so I took it in for service, the tech ghosted my whole computer and
put on a new hard drive to find that it was still doing the same thing so
decided to reformat and reinstall windows xp, after bringing home and
starting it up I no longer had any sound at all. I have reloaded Sound
Blaster Live so many times updated drivers checked all controls, run
diagnostics, been working on it for a week. After reading many different
forums alot of people are having the same problem afer a reinstall and I have
not found where anybody has been able to correct. PLEASE...if somebody has
found a fix let me know. Thanks so much
