I re installed Windows XP, BT Voyager Modem and AOL and now have no sound.
Windows says I have "No Aufio Device". I only installed new software - I did
not touch any hardware - Any one any ideas please?

I would suggest going into the control panel, then system and then fond the
audio device thats not working. If it shows the driver as being installed
remove and then re-install the driver. If it doesn't show a driver then
simply clock to add a driver.

Sounds as if the classic 'it stole the IRQ' just appeared. Each device needs
its own interrupt channel and most likely the modem stole the sounds. Try
going to Control Panel, system, device manager and remove the modem. Reboot
and see if Windows can sort it out to give you the sound back and install
your modem with another IRQ that won't cause the conflict.

Right click on My Computer - Properties - Hardware and see if there are any
audio devices listed but have an error associated with them. If so, you
will need to get the associated drivers for the sound device. What kind of
sound card do you have? Is it an on-board audio or an add-in audio card?
How did you 'reinstall?" Was this a repair install or did you format and
install clean?

Thank you for your reply - but it doesn't work - Device Manager says "The
drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)" - and when I search for
drivers none are found - Sounds and Audio Device Properties says No Audio
Device - but I have not removed or touched any internal itmes - just
re-installed software!! - But thanks anyway

I have Multimedia Audio Controller & Multimedia Video Controller listed - No
makers name given - I believe that the sound card is part of the NVIDIA
GeForce4 MX440 card - and I have MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR 8582 and OPTORITE CD-RW
CW4802 drives installed - does that mean anything to anyone?

I did a new installation but without formating the hard drive so it wrote
over all the old files as I used the same location as for the previous
installation.

Right click on each multimedia device - choose uninstall and when finished -
reboot and see if the system prompts you for the drivers or just installs
some default drivers for them.
If that doesn't work do the following:
Can you right click on each of the multimedia devices and choose Properties
and post what they show
Device status on General Tab
Driver Details on Driver Tab?

Tried what you suggested and the following is what happened....

Multimedia Audio Controller
Device Type: Other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCI bus 0 device 31, function 5
Device status....
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Drivers
It then does a search and returns - The hardware was not installed because
the wizard cannot find the necessary software

Same for the Multimedia Video Controller
Device Type: Other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCI Slot2 (PCI bus 3 device 1, function 0)
Device status....
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Drivers
It then does a search and returns - The hardware was not installed because
the wizard cannot find the necessary software

Don't know if that will help you to help me resolve this problem? Still,
thank you for your patience and help so far.

If you don't have a drivers/install CD for this hardware, I would suggest
getting Everest from Lavalys
http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3
installed on this machine and see what Video and Audio devices you have.
You will need to go to the Mfgr site and get drivers for the Audio and Video
hardware you have. Is this a brand name computer or home built? If not
home built - did it come with CD's for the hardware drivers?
