First off, do you have the speaker icon in system tray...
if not, you will probably have to install the drivers for your sound chip.

OTOH, if the speaker icon is there...
right click on it an look at properties, you may have the sound muted
or set too low

Does the inbuilt speaker work?

Launch the Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices, then check a few
things, e.g.
- Under the Volume tab, untick the "Mute" check box.
- Under the Sounds tab, select the "Windows Default" scheme.
Now click "Asterisk" in the "Program Events" box, then click
the right-pointing arrow to the left of the "Browse" button.
You should here a sound. Try it with your external speakers
plugged and unplugged from your sound card.
- Play with the various other settings under Audio Devices.
- If this is a laptop, make sure to turn on the sound. Most laptops
have special function keys to do this. Some have a volume control
slider/wheel on the side of the laptop.
