No sound -

I have recently changed my ISP from AOL to Virgin and somewhere during that
process I've loss all the incidental sounds that XP has (you know, chimes,
chords etc. when you open/close programs, when you log on/off. It is a very
silent world. I've tried to correct this but all I've found is the section
regarding sound on the Accessibility drop down, and this doesn't really apply
- and besides it doesn't make any difference anyway!

More unusual, is the fact that when I venture onto the entertainment page to
check out some new film releases, I generally get some sound but no picture
on the trailers - just a bright green background on the screen.

Even more scary, since the change of ISP, 4 games have vanished from my
hard drive and all I'm left with are 'shortcuts to nowhere' on my desktop.
This I find annoying as money changed hands for these!

If you can throw any light on this weirdo stuff I'd be really greatful.
Otherwise shall I just sue AOL??????

(PS Don't go all computerspeak on me, I'm a learner)

Hearing some sound would indicate your sound card IS working, and there is
some problem with sound in Windows events.
If present, delete a null value in the registry. To do so:
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Click HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
3. Check for a value in the right pane that looks like this:
<No Name> :REG_SZ:
4. If this value is present, click the value, and then press DELETE.
5. Quit Registry Editor.
