no sound

I downloaded and updated windows xp home edition and now don't have any sound
In device manager audio codecs device usage blank and cannot change
anything
legacy audio drivers usage blank and cannot change anything
legacy video capture device usage blank and cannot change
anything
media control devices usage blank and cannot change anything

Download the latest XP specific drivers for your soundcard.

Un-install the soundcard, re-boot, let XP recognise it then install the
downloaded drivers.
