No sound

I am hoping to get some input on this problem. My computer has sound then
all of a sudden the sound is gone. No specific program is used (or at least
not the same one every time this happens.) I reboot and then the sound
returns. It might be on for 4or 5 days and then it happens again with no
change in the programs that I use daily.
Have updated all drivers, had a new motherboard put in. It is a 10 month old
Sony Laptop with Realtek drivers. Had it tied up for 2 months with the Geek
Squad but to no avail.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Again, reboot and it is usually fine.

I tried but to no avail.
Maybe this will clarify things. When I first start computer the sound is on.
Then when I go to sign in before WindowsXP starts loading the sound is then
gone. I reboot and it comes back.
I did try the previous suggestion adding that line to the registry but it
still occurred this morning.
Driving me crazy and I don't want to tie it up with the Geek Squad for
another 2 months.
