Sound problem

I am going nuts with my intermittant sound problem. I have sound when I turn
on my computer, it might stay on all day or it might go away. I reboot and
it is back.
I have had my Sony Laptop with Windows XP Home Media edition in to the "Geek
Squad" twice and they held it up for a month. First they oiled it???? and
the second time replaced my mother board.
I refuse to have it tied up again but it is happening again.
Any ideas would be so greatly appreciated.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest drivers but it still happens.
Today I have sound. Yesterday it went out twice.
Again, rebooting brings it back.
Help someone please!!!!!!!

Does this happen after specific programs or games run? What kind of sound
card do you have? Does it sometimes come back without a reboot?

I have a Realtek HD and it was just replaced when the Geek Squad put in a
new motherboard to remedy the problem.
It happens at any given time. Not after any specific program.
Before the motherboard was replaced I could tap the computer and it might
come back on.
Then it just went out altogether. They held it up for another month and
replaced the motherboard.
Got it back and 2 days later the same thing happened.
I put it on this morning and only opened Outlook and it was fine, an hour
later it was out. I rebooted and it is o.k. again.
Sony didn't even have an answer other than to bring it in for repairs which
I have done twice now to no avail.
