No Sound

There is no sound on my computer what so ever. It was accidentally removed
from the "control panal". There is no volume adjustment button on the task
bar.
I have Windows xp Home Edition.
I have tried looking in the "Help and Support Center" and have had no luck.
It seems that when I go into "Device Manager" everything is there but "sound
card"
Im not a computer wizz and Im not sure if "sound card" is suppose to be there.
I have spoken to other friends online about my problem and have been told to
perform a reinstallation of Windows xp. Will this give me sound back? Will it
delete any other files etc?
If you have any information or ideas what I could do it would be greatly
appreciated!
