lost my sound

I have no sound, accept for Windows XP System sounds. No other sound works.
No winamp, no media players, no games, no DVD player sounds, no nothing. I
tried system restore, but that isn't working for some reason. I tried to
adjust the volume control, but the "volume control" icon seems to have
mysteriously dissappeared from my taskbar, so I went to settings, conttrol
panal, sounds, speach, and audio devices, adjust system volume, but
everything is greyed out and disabled and I can't do anything. Meanwhile, I'm
still stuck without any sound. It's the sound card that came installed with
the computer. I've done nothing with it.

What do I do? Someone please help!

Remove your sound card drivers and reboot and let the system install them
again - else consider going to the manufacturer's site and downloading the
newest drivers and installing them.

i had that happen once, at kellys korner.com under tweaks there a entry
to restore volume controls to default, that worked for me.
