No Sound.. Says No Audio Device, but drivers are there and enabled "working prop

I just got XP. I had a soundblaster card that I installed.
Everything worked fine... then all of a sudden it doesn't
recognize any audio device. I've upgraded all the drivers.
I have removed Soundblaster and all associated drivers and
applications, yet I still have no sound. Anyone got a
solution?

Thought I should add more information. The soundblaster
card was 'old' i was told, so that is why I removed it. At
least I think it is removed... when using a tool to
discover drivers, it tells me the driver is still there,
but I can't find it anywhere to remove it.

My computer was built for me by a friend, so I can just
tell you that it is AMDuron processor, 800 mghz, 386 MB of
Ram. It has an onboard VIA AC'97 sound. The control panels
tell me that the audio card is working properly. I have
uninstalled and let the computer do its thing, but it
still tells me no audio device.

I really need to have sound, so if anyone out there can
help me, please do!
