No Sound on Startup

A

Al

My PC running Xp Home (SP2) is no longer playing the Windows startup
sound. Everything else is fine including all other system sounds
(logoff, etc.). All sounds are working when I play in control
panel/sounds, itunes, etc.

I've tried all the suggestions posted including installing power toys,
checking control panel/sounds, running sfc /scannow and Kelly's Tweaks.

Does enyone have any other suggestions that I can try ... It's not work
doing a reinstall just to fix this problem, but want to try to figure
out what is causing the problem. Thx.

Not an expert but try this.
Click: My Computer >> Control Panel >> Sounds and Audio Services >>
Sounds(tab).
Under Program Events: Scroll down to "Start Windows" Under the windows
catagory. Click Browse with "Start Windows" Highlighted, and Navigate to this
file:
C:\Windows\Media\Windows XP Startup.wav

Its most probably gona be already set on media as this is the default folder
but you know the directory if not =). Once this is selected click Apply, then
Ok, Then restart and see what happenes, Then conect, and come back here and
tell us what happens lol =).
Good Luck too you

Try Navigating to that wave file through ur an explorer browser and playing
it in windows media player. Does it play the sound straight up like that?

Try using the Windows Logon heading, and put the Windows Startup sound
THERE (in Cntl Pnl, Sounds). Does it work there?

Thanks for all of the responses .. Tried all and still have the
problem.

I tried Under Program Events: Scroll down to "Start Windows" Under the
windows
catagory. Click Browse with "Start Windows" Highlighted, and Navigate
to this
file: C:\Windows\Media\Windows XP Startup.wav and making sure it is
checked and able to run. Everything is ok here.

I also tried Navigating to that wave file through an explorer browser
and playing
it in windows media player. Played ok.

Also checked MVP Kelly Theriot's website for "Where did my sounds go"
and tried all the tweaks without success.

If anyone has any other suggestions .. let me know. This one has me
purplexed as the logoff sounds and other system sounds such as in MSN
are working fine. It's just the start up wave that isn't working.

I'd say you're one of the lucky ones that doesn't have to listen to that
stupid MickeyMouse startup sound when your Windoze box reaches for its
desktop. Count your blessings and stop looking for a "solution".

Yes .. I've tried all of Kelly's tweaks .... and none have worked.

What's odd is that my sound at log-off works and all other system
sounds are OK.

The Startup wave also works from Control Panel/Sounds and if I play
from Windows/Media in explorer.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have seen systems that have enough "startup" items going on that the
"startup" sound is never heard. Reducing the startup items restored the
playback. It's like the "sound playback" gets a real low priority in
startup and all the "important stuff" firing up precludes the sound
being played.

In the olden days of Win95, etc. it was always better to not set a
startup sound in case a program that was starting up had sounds and
took control of the sound card. Things work differently in XP, but it
might be useful for you to see what else is starting with Windows.

Still no success ... Deleted a couple of startups with no change.

All sounds except startup are working.

Any other suggestions would be most appreciated.
