No sound in phone dialer - cannot hear the person on the other end

Hello all,

When I send or receive calls on the Windows XP Phone Dialer (Start > Run >>
"Dialer.exe"), I cannot hear the person on the other end, even though the
person can hear me. I have a headset with a microphone, but I cannot hear the
person through the other end through my headset. Audio does work on the
computer, as I can listen to music on Media Player, for example. I have tried
closing all programs that use the sound card so that only Phone Dialer is
remaining, but I am having no luck.

Interestingly, I have the exact opposite happen: I can hear others, but they
cannot hear me. Anyone help us out? Thank you.
