No sound from speakers

Leona

I had to reinstall Windows XP and now my speakers don't work. They work on my
daughters computer so the speakers are fine. They worked on my computer
until I had to reinstall the Windows XP.

Reinstall your sound drivers. Either from one of the discs that came
with your computer, or from the manufacturer's website.

After you reinstall the operating system, you need to reinstall all the
drivers for your PC's hardware, including your sound card. Did you do
this?

What is the make and model of the PC?

What happens when you download and install the WinXP-specific audio
drivers, as provided by your sound card's or computer's manufacturer?
Hint: They'll be on the drivers disk(s) that came with either the
computer, the motherboard, or the audio controller (if purchased
separately), or on support web site of the manufacturer of the computer,
the motherboard, or the audio controller, which ever applies.

The computer came with everything preinstalled. It was custom made but Dom's
Custom Computers is out of business. I can't locate the man who built the
computer.

You didn't get any discs with it?

Or a parts list?

Use the free Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com) to determine the
manufacturers, makes, and models of the computer's divers components and
obtain the necessary device drivers directly from those manufacturers'
support web sites.

In that case, follow Bruce's advice (run Belarc Advisor) since you need
to know the makes and models of evey component inside your PC. An
alternative is to open your PC case and eyeball the information that way
(which will probably involve physically removing -- and later
re-attaching -- your different components).

For starters, you need to know if you use your motherboard's onboard
audio or if there is a separate sound card. But I would defnitely try
Belarc first. Basically, you need to obtain drivers for your motherboard
chipset, video card and sound card, network card, etc. These can usually
be downloaded from the various manufacturers' Web sites. Once you have
them all downloaded, they will all need to be installed. Device Manager
is helpful to use to determine which drivers have yet to be installed.

If this sort of activity isn't something you feel comfortable doing,
find a friend who is good at it or a competent technician (stay away
from Geek Squad, etc.) who will do this work for you for a fair price.

The most likely cause is that you have lost the driver for your sound
device. Do you know what kind of sound card or on-board sound device you
have? If not, google for belarc. That is a site that will examine your
system and report on everything that is on it. Once you know what sound
device you have you should google for the driver for that device. Download
and run it.
Hope this helps.
