No sound device

I think i have the same problem. I must have read a rice of forum posts by now with no answer to the problem. Everything seems to work nicely except that windows doesn't consider my soundcard an audio device. Dxdiag is able to play direct music with my new audio card as well as the old integrated one but everything else fails. My old Win ME plays all the sounds happily and i have updated all the drivers three times, so the problem seems to be with Win XP.

Do see the volume icon in tray?
Can you play direct music with dxdiag if you select your device rather than windows synth?
When did the problem start and how?

If you had the problem fixed without reformatting everything please let me know. Im totally helpless

I have that problem, went all through the troubleshooting and couldn't fix
it. If anyone knows what causes sounds and audio devices properties to be
greyed, please let me know. Thank you.
