Another NO SOUND problem ...

I got a "emachine" model T5048 with a Realtek sound card. The machine comes
with everything presinstalled.

On bootup, everything is OK, including apparently sound drivers. Realtek
shows up on bootup as the "sound device". When, I use Windows media to play
something, it plays OK.

Within a few minutes after bootup thougn, a check of "Sound and audio
properties" show "no sound devices". But if the Windows media was turned on,
the music continues playing even when with no "sound device". But if I turn
off Windows media, turn it on again, then no sound.

Another bootup corrects the problem. I'm trying to figure out if:

- There's file corruption, and if I can get the drivers somewhere,
reinstall, I'm OK. Would uninstall do the trick?? I'm afraid to uninstall
since the system comes with everything preinstalled.

- Some virus or other program conflicting?? How could I check that??

Any ideas. Right now, reboot solves the problem.

Thanks Mary.

Actually I decided to give the "emachines" (actually Gateway) email support
line a try also, besides posting here, and they emailed me back a four
recommendations, about 4 pages worth, one of which was to do a "system
restore", which appears for now to have solved the problem. The "sound
drivers" didn't dissapear within two to 5 minutes of bootup as before.

I got an email answer within an hour, and the steps were detailed, and step
by step.

The other solution, to reinstall the drivers, I tried also, as I see no harm
done. I was unsuccessful in "uninstalling" it though, as during the uninstall
process, the system went into "system not responding" mode. However, if I
were successful here, they gave me instructions to reinstall the preinstalled
drivers, through a utility I didn't know I had, which they included under
"Programs".

As I've tried phone support, and live chats previously, I found this "email"
method more to my liking. I didn't expect a quick response, or any at all,
and yet I got it within an hour. With "phone support", I often have trouble
with the Indian accents. With live chat, unless the problem is simple, it's
hard to try various methods, that often take numerous reboots to solve.

As to Realtek, I got loss at "Realtek.com" website, and the "emachines"
email support got back to me long before I was able to figure out this
Website. I found a number of links to updates to the sound driver during this
search. The problem is I don't know which is the right one, or if the
"emachines update program" had already done it for me.

In fact, I got all the update programs activated on all of my PC's in the
house, 4 of them, among them Windows, emachines, HP, Verizon, Adobe to name a
few, and I often wonder what is being updated, and if the updates actually
introduce conflicts into the systems.

Thanks for the response, and I thought I mention the experience for the
record here.

It seems the "emachines" was not only priced right, and the support, at the
least the email support, was prompt, at for the moment, actually worked.

I am glad you have everything working, FrankChin. Gateway has improved their
email support. I have four up and running Gateways. I've given away a couple as
well.
I would never do a system restore... Back up, back up, back up...
I did find some drivers on the RealTek web site that I had been looking for in
the past.
