NO SOUND DEVICE-VERY STRANGE

J

Working of XP-Pro platform, after computer has been online for over an hour
or so, all sound has disappeared. Double-clicking Sound and Audio Devices
on the Control Panel I see under the Audio tab the default device is grayed
out with the notification 'no playback devices.' All of the necessary
drivers appear under the Hardware tab. If I reboot then the sound comes
back normally. I use adaware, spybot, and cws shredder daily- also have
Norton anti-virus installed.

Please help!!

Thanks!

This problem is spreading because I have the same thing !
Except that I lose the sound connection after just a few minutes.
Audio works immediately after rebooting, but a few minutes later,
Like user JDW, Device Manager shows the sound device is "operating
correctly," but the Sound & Audio panel shows no playback device, no
record device, and the volume control is greyed-out.

I also ran a complete virus check without finding anything.

The only other symptom, is the computer is all-but-locked up for about
5 minutes after rebooting. For example, an AIM window comes up, but
if you click it off, it freezes up and doesn't go away until this 4-5
minute period is over. And if you try to click "connect to internet"
before the 5 mins is up, nothing happens.

After the 5 mins, you can get onto the 'net, but the sound is gone.

Ideas?

thanks guys
