No sound at all

After running windows update i no longer have sound. When
i try to use anything with sound it says this cannot be
played because windows hardware is in use by another
apllication.If i try to use windows media player it says
no soundcard available.Yet the other day the music popped
on and played. any ideas what could be the problem
 
In sounds and audio devices, under control panel, go to
the audio tab, and make sure the correct driver is
selected under default device. Might be the problem.
