No sound at all

Just set up new Vista computer - using a monitor that has speakers built in,
also have a set of external speakers. No Sound at all! Not at initial start,
not at test, nothing. I tried plugging speakers into other inlets...(Cannot
decipher graphic symbols that Vista has for their audio system.) no luck.
Tried to have only monitor speakers, no luck.
Internal "diagnostics" indicates that the audio system indicates all is
working.
No sound...
Any help?

I have found driver support for sound very patchy. My onboard Realtek
AC97 would work with the driver built into the system after a lot of
buzzing and crackling at start up time.

My external Soundblaster Audigy 2NX was recognised, reported as
functiong and did nothing either. I think you may just have to wait
for your manufacturer to come up with the drivers unless you want to
spend money on a new sound card.

I bought a new Creative USB Surround 5.1. It's great. When you plug
it in, Vista downloads the drivers and sets it up. The bundled
drivers for XP and Win2K don't work but you don't need them.

Also, try this. Go to Hardware and Sounds in Control Panel, Click Manage
Audio Devices. Click on each of the items that control your "Speakers" and
click the "Properties" button at the bottom. Under "Advanced" uncheck the
boxes under exclusive mode. Now go back in to the "Speakers" control that
lists your sound card. Click "Properties". Click "Advanced". Now recheck the
boxes under "Exclusive Mode". Now hit the "test" button. Your sound should
now work.

This worked for me in dealing with this problem.

Hope this helps.
