No sound and cannot play mp3 in WMP

Hi, This has done me Ed in big style, here goes,
(1) got no sound icon on lappy at the bottom of XP Pro tool bar, however
sound will play if I use WMP music?....hmmmm,

(2) cannot play sound on web (you tube - my space etc..?)

(3) also cannot play mpeg video's on WMP?? Cannot control sound on lappy but
I can on some games (Command & Conquer etc...?)

(4) When I start up ......no sound? cannot see sound driver in control
pannel (sound devices?) however sound drivers are there in device manager
AC'97 and the icon "control pannel is available on the bottom tool bar but
doesn't contol anything?........doh !!

need help, I have System mechanic pro 7 and this has showed a device that is
"disabled" it is " SVCHOST.EXE " it states that it controls windows sound
but I am unable to "Enable" it..........doh....!!!! again........

(5) went to file svchost in system 32 to run direct......no luck......DOH!!!

searched through web and windows files for a common fault but no luck there
so if anyone can help yes please.................going bald very quickly.

"System mechanic"....That's probably most of youre problems....
As for sound,has the chipset installation utility been installed for youre
board (intel,amd,etc),that gets youre pc hardware going,sound included.
If so,open device mgr,expand sound tree,R.click sound hardware 1 @ a time,
select uninstall,do not restart after each.XP will reinstall sound on
restart once
thru in device..As for OS sound/service,go to run,type:services.msc In msc,
scroll to windows sound,double click,set to auto,start service.Also,try
run,type:
DXDIAG run Direct X sound tests

Thanks Andrew, seems to have solved the sound problem just need to sort out
the Windows media problem not playing the MP3 video, thanks again...
