no server on Port 80

I am not really following your train of thought here...

If you have a web server (IIS) installed on your local machine, then you really should always work
locally against the web server.

just need it if you want to see some features run, right?...and even still isn't it just better to
check the online server?

hmmm I must not understand your question or how it all
works - I need to be able to publish via Frontpage the
changes I make to the site and this is what is not
working .... yes some features I need to have ... ftp'ing
the changes is not an option.

When trying to convert sabatellohomes to a subweb I
receive the following error message:

Server error: Unable to create a disk-based web
at "C:Inetpub\wwwroot\sabatellohomes" because its parent
web would not be a disk-based web. Create the disk-based
web elsewhere, outside of your web server's document
hierarchy.

I am realizing that the site should not be the default
website for my computer but a folder under, but not sure
how to go about making this change or what the above
error message means.

When you installed IIS, it should have create the following location:

C:\inetpub\wwwroot

now with the above created, you would never access it directly, you would use:

http://localhost
http://127.0.0.1
http://yourmachinename

either of the above will give you access to the content in:

C:\inetpub\wwwroot

when access via a browser or FP (with the extensions installed and configured)

Once you are able to access http://localhost in FP, you

would then create a folder called:
sabatellohomes

you would then right click on sabatellohomes and select
Click to expand...
to convert it to a web (subweb).
 
Ok, it sound like after you re-installed IIS, the you opened

C:\inetpub\wwwroot

directly in FP, which converted it to a disk-based web.

The only way that I can think to reverse this, is to un-install the IIS again, then re-install it
and then do not open C:\inetpub\wwwroot directly in FP, but use:

http://localhost
http://127.0.0.1
http://yourmachinename

It's always been a wonderment to me. The only local web that asks me to open it is an old FP98 web which I'm about to delete. My other FP2002 created and maintained webs never ask for me to turn on services, so I don't. In fact when I re-did another old FP98 web with FP2002 that web stopped asking for the local server to be turned on as well.

So, since I hardly ever work with that FP98 web, I never turn on services on the local machine...never have a problem of any kind.

I think I may have alluded to this months ago when I asked if it were ok to uninstall PWS (I never did though).

Soooo I remain confusted.

lemme clarify...

With FP98 and previous versions...I HAD to run the local server to work locally.

When I installed FP2002 (full version) I never have to turn on the local server except when working on the old FP98 created local webs.

I have done all this and now get the original error 2
message opening registry key - is there something I can
look for in this registry file - I have not reinstalled
the FP 2002 server extensions - would this in any way
help?
tomorrow the Adelphia guy is coming to hook up our
interlink account and I sure hope this doesn't just gum
up the works more!

Windows Newsgroup, because you should not be getting any error with the default install of IIS with
FP2000 extensions.

Do not install the FP2002 extensions until you are able to access the IIS correctly with the default
install.

Thank you for all of your help Thomas - it is GREATLY
appreciated - I now have it up and running - after the
cable was installed yesterday, I started completely over -
uninstalled extensions, FrontPage 2002, and IIS ... and
deleted the web I was trying to upload from harddrive
after copying to a CD. Then I reinstalled IIS rebooted
Frontpage 2002 rebooted - well y ou know the story -
anyway thanks for dealing with me all this time and sorry
I was on wrong newsgroup.
 
I wouldn't say you were initially in the wrong newsgroup, just that you hit a point where I though
Windows or IIS newsgroup would be a better choice for you get a solution.

Anyway, glad to hear that got everything working!
