No "Save As" dialogue box when downloading (saving) file

A computer newbie friend phoned me and asked me to talk him through
downloading a file.

Told him to click on the download link and then when the Run, Save,
Cancel dialogue box appeared to click on "Save".

Was about to tell him how to select the location to save the file but he
told me that all he saw was a box with the file name. There were no
location choices listed in the left column.

From what I can gather it appears to have been saved directly to the
desktop. He has kids and I suspect one of them has altered a setting.

Plan to pop round his house to see if I can sort it out.

However, I have never had reason to alter the way I run or save
downloads, so I am scratching my head as to what settings I need to
alter.

Create then merge this registry file to restore the
"Always Ask Before Opening This Type of File" dialog
box.

1. Copy below and paste into Notepad.

----------copy inside only----------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute]

----------copy inside only----------

2. Save-as OpenAsk.reg (or any name + .reg)

3. Double-click or right-click and merge into the registry.

Depending on the browser (IE, Firefox, etc.) there are configurable
options regarding downloads.

If I use IE it asks me and I can specify the location, Firefox doesn't
ask me because I don't want it to (but it could). Straight to my
desktop.

Yes - please pop over and if you have trouble get back with what kind
of browser and what you see and how you think you would like it to
work and maybe even the WWW page and what you are trying to download.

Think you've hit the nail on the head. Although I almost exclusively use
IE8, I also have Firefox installed.

Just looked in Options and saw that default download location is
Desktop. Have changed it to "Always ask me where to save files", as I
prefer this option.

Have no doubt that when I pop round to my friend I will see he is using
Firefox.

Thanks.
