No safe mode

Hi all, I have inherited a Pavilion 523n and deleted numerous virus,
spyware, Trojans, and key loggers. I can't get rid of Altnet but that is
not a concern as it is just a fragment of Kazza. I have updated to SP2 with
all the other updates from Microsoft. My problem is that I cannot enter
safe mode. When F8 is pressed the menu asking for safe mode and all the
other choices appears but none work. It keeps going back to the afore
mentioned menu. I did the msconfig /safeboot option but this locked out
normal start as well as safe mode. I only recovered by loading a recovery
disk and setting the bios to default. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

If I got a used computer, the first thing I would do with it would be to
reinstall the operating system cleanly. You have no idea how the computer
has been maintained, what has been installed incorrectly, what is missing,
what viruses and spyware there may be, etc. I wouldn't want to live with
somebody else's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddie porn, etc., and
I wouldn't recommend that anyone else do either.

In your case, you already know that the computer has and had all sorts of
problems, so everything I say above goes double.

When recieving a hand me down machine, the best thing to do is to start
over. (reinstall the OS).
