No response from some links

WIN98 IE6
========
(Javascript problem ?)
I have posted this a few times earlier without getting a single reply .

The problem .
I visit a page www.google.co.in.

there are a few links on this page .
Groups, news,images and "more ....."

The link to "more" responds there is NO response from the others. Groups ,
new, Images . Not even a "page not found".
I have made a little headaway . It seems the non-active links go through a
Javascript .

The problem now is:
I cannot find any place to activate or deactivate Java script.
I have done this a few times : Repaired IE , Started IEsetup a few times.

Have you installed Java? If not try
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp to download and install.

Hi,
Those aren't Javascript links which aren't working for you. This might be a
language setting. Internet Options> General> Languages> try putting English
US at the top or try other choices. Or try different settings from
http://www.google.co.in/ > Preferences or try another language from the
choices on the page http://www.google.co.in/

Next, clear out Temporary Internet Files, History and Cookies. See
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

You might try disabling third-party security, privacy, ad-blocking programs
to see if one of them is blocking these links.

Hope this helps,
Don

Another thing this problem is not ONLY with Google . I can log in to Yahoo.
But I cannot look into the folders. :)

The position now I have tried All that you advised .
Java is already installed .
Is Javascript dependet on Java ?

It is not only at Google that this problem appears . At yahoo I can login
but not see the folders ???

Have already done a virus check . Will do it again . And clear out the cache
once .
This time nothing seems to have ANY effect.

Hi,
Is it at Yahoo Mail that you can't see folders?

Then, again, try disabling third-party security, privacy, ad-blocking
programs to see if one of them is blocking these links. Are any of these
programs configured to block scripts, scripting, active content? Any pop-up
blockers installed such as Yahoo toolbar or Google toolbar?

If this is a Javascript problem, you can refresh the scripting engine. Go to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp
for the appropriate (for your OS)download of Windows Script 5.6

Hi Don ,
Thanks for the help .
It is on Yahoo Mail that I cannot see the folders.
I have Google toolbar , Yahoo tool bar . I UNINSTALLED both. No luck . I
have gone through the privacy , ad-blocking etc ..
Have reinstalled Scripting host .
But here is another confusing observation .
Tripod this time .
The URL - http://tripod.lycos.com
The section which contains the input for login , logout does NOT show (
white area ) .
The section below this is Account info etc. this shows .
BOTH it seems use Java script .

I suspect it is some sort of a Profiles problem .
I had a similar problem earlier . The problem got cured by creating a
profile with all NEW options . By making a COPY the problem stayed. ! ??

I am sorry for additions to this topic erratically .

All these functions work in Firefox , as well in Ie6 with win 98 on a
computer connected on the network, through Freeproxy .

I have confirmed that the same problem appears on ALL the seperate
identities on this computer .

Another thing .
This problem appeared when I restored a month old backup due to someother
fault and selected overwrite .
Even then it seems to me a reinstall or repair should recover from this kind
of a problem .

I cannot install XP due some hanging problem which appears after the first
reboot. I cannot even reinstall WIN98 SE due some other problems.

I am running Linux on this too and find recovery from problems a much more
direct affair precisely because it is not very advanced , I mean there is no
registry there. And I suspect it is something to do with the registry that
is creating this problem .

Hi,
Well... given the Tripod login situation, this does sound like a Javascript
problem.

Try these two commands from Start> Run
regsvr32 vbscript.dll [enter]
regsvr32 jscript.dll [enter]

Reregistering the DLLs listed in the Resolution section of this article may
help:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679

Go to Internet Options> Security> Internet Zone> Reset to Default. Default
settings should allow Javascript.

Are you sure that a third-party security program isn't blocking scripts,
scripting, active content?

Thanks again DON,
I had already visited the article you mention 281679.
There is one message which maybe of interest
I did the needfull for all the dlls mentioned . With shell32 I got the the
reply that "DLLregisterserver could not be registered " to check shell32
with Pview . Pview does not show SHell32 in memory.
I have done the internet options security settings before . Will do them
again .
I have almost given up on this .
Drastic measures like reinstalling WIN98Se which I have are also not
possible . As some major errors crop up after reboot. Like "Class key not
found ~".
I have done many nonstandard things so I am not sure of third party blockers
doing something. They are not visibly activated.
It is possible that I have overlooked some settings in content and privacy
but I doubt it.
I have also used Hijackthis / Lspfix . With Lspfix I had to restore a
previous version of the registry :).

Any help is still welcome. Though I am using Firefox as my default browser.

Some more info ..

This is certain . That this problem appeared immediately after I restored
from a month old back ( there was no problem with this profile then , it was
ther in another profile ).

A strange thing . I located NO virus using AVG in windows .
However when I ran AVG in a dos box . I got 2 virus indication in
Windows\downloaded programfiles identified as ADAWARE.BAL.
Still trying everything .
It maybe some knid of Virus .
IS THERE ANYTHING WRONG IF I DELETE ALL THE PROFILES ?
I intend to delete them through Explorer.
I will take a backup before doing that .

Just for the record .

This seems to be impossible to cure without reinstalling ( I cannot do that
due to some errors half way ).
Have tried EVERYthing I found in this group. Countless Virus scans , Hijack,
Lspfix etc.
And I am convinced there is a minor problem which transferred the affliction
from one profile to the one I use most .
If I finally resolve the problem will post here .

Hi,
Sorry. Microsoft newsservers had problems over the weekend and I was busy.
With IE6 on Win 98, you should have a "repair" option from Add/remove
programs> MSIE> Add/remove> Repair. Is that an option?

Don

Anil Bhattacharji

Hi Don ,
And thanks ,
Yes that is an option. But that really is the first thing I tried and
have done it more than once .
My guess is that it is something to do with site where I have an account
.. Both Yahoo and Google and tripod.
Yet some complex sites ( an on-line trading one for example) give no
problem.
I am in no hurry as I can manage . I just want to see if this can be
solved without drastic measures like reinstalling windows.

This is just to say the problem is solved .....
I am not sure what did it but this may be of help to others.

The Problem:
SOME links on a page would not work . Not unknown pages but google.co.in.
only one link would respond. I have noted the problems in previous mails .
I did everything I could oick up from group .
Scanned for virus , for hijackers , used Hijackthis , lspfix , followed the
instructions where it is advised to use regserver32 for urlmon.dll . etc.

----
I found some suspicious files when scanning with AVG in a dos box . This did
NOT solve the problem.
There WAS some sort of virus(?) in the computer I cannot say which as it was
never caught .

One thing strange was happening . When I shutdown the computer it would
reboot .
What seemed to have solved that problem and the unresponsive links was a
simple scandisk of Hard disks which I mainly use for dumping programs and
have no executable files on them .
I just did a scandisk ( not even thorough ) on ALL drives . No errors were
found on C: D: . Soe were found on E: F: . and after that the rebooting
problem went . As well as the unresponsive links irritation.

I dont believe in ghosts , now I am not so certain.
