No Remote Desktop checkbox available

T

Tom Ferguson

On XP Home under the Remote tab of System, only the Remote Assistance and
its corresponding checkbox are shown in the window. The bottom half of the
window which should show Remote Desktop and a checkbox for "Allow users to
connect remotely to this computer" is missing. When I attempt to install
Remote Desktop from my XP disk, I get a message that it is already
installed. I am connected to the internet via a wireless router. How can I
get the Remote tab of System to show the checkbox for Remote Desktop?

XP Home does not support the use of Remote Desktop in a "host" mode. The checkbox you are missing is
only available in XP Pro edition of the OS.

So, with that said...you can use VNC or NetMeeting Remote Desktop or Remote Admin (which I have not
used) to access/control a XP Home box remotely...

Get the VNC or Remote Admin software from...

http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/
http://www.deltasoft.hr/remote/index_en.htm

For help with NetMeeting RDS look at this KB article. NetMeeting is built-in to XP and can not be
upgraded...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;233175

Note that the VNC data stream is *NOT* encrypted so that is a potential security problem if you use
if over the public internet. Some folks run VNC through VPN tunnels to get around that issue.

Or...update to XP Pro...:)
