No Properties for Services or Hardware in the Device Manager

I can't access the Properties for hardware shown in the Device manager or
the properties for XP services. Additionally, the extended tab in the
services window is blank. Also, I don't get a response when clicking on a
Related Topics link in Help and Support. That problem started today.

Attempting to fix the problem, I ran the System File checker and replaced
some of the files, well at least I think I replaced the files. I don't have
the XP install CD, just the proprietary installation disks that came with
the computer. I've defragged, ran CheckDisk, scanned for viruses (McAfee)
and spyware/malware (Ad-Aware).

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

I'm running XP Home and have full administrator privileges.

W/O the xp cd (retail version),you didnt run Sfs /Scannow file checker,about
the only recommended fix,is to at start-up,tap the F8 key,select safe mode
with networking,enter as ADM.,see if you can access properties,etc..If so
youre user account is no-good,delete and create a new one.
