no printers digitally signed

At some point the printer started printing garbage when I
attempted to print from really almost anywhere. (Perhaps
by coincidence the same day that windows did an automatic
update).
I removed the printer and tried readding it.
I tried installing all of the critical updates and
service packs to XP.
At this point (I don't know when this started being true)
when I go into add a new printer all of the printers have
the warning that the driver is not digitally signed.
I click on windows update from within the add printer
option to try and fix the drivers. Usually it comes back
saying there is no information about the specified
device. Sometimes it comes back with a shorter list of
drivers that are digitally signed but not the one I need.
How can I get the print drivers back so that they are at
least digitally signed?
My printer is actually a IBM LaserPrinter6 by Lexmark. I
have another printer and tried attaching that too. That
printer fails as well.

The latest driver package for your printer can be downloaded from the
Lexmark website at
http://drivers3.lexmark.com/drivers.nsf/printer+driver/3BDA745A25DB396985256735005703F9?OpenDocument

Ensure you have removed all traces of the previous drivers.... since it's a
Lexmark, follow the instructions at Bruce Sanderson's website paying
particular attention to the special section on Lexmark printers:

My concern about doing this:
1. Reading this it seems that this will delete all of
the print drivers. What happens if I buy a new printer?
2. The Lexmark driver never worked for me. I was using
the IBM driver.
3. The page you referred me to download the driver does
not list my printer as a supported printer.

It really seems like the automatic windows update broke
the drivers. I am toying with reinstalling windows, but
that seems like a drastic step. Help!

From the command prompt, type

sfc /scannow

And see if this brings back the digital signing.

I tried sfc /scannow and that did not help at all.

I followed the original instructions despite my initial
reservations.

I found that all of my print drivers are still unsigned.
I installed the Lexmark drivers from the site you
referred me to. I found that my printer was not an
option, but I picked a printer anyway and found that that
driver was unsigned too.

What next?
