No preview when editing video?

I can't seem to get a preview while editing any video using either
Sony Vegas 7.0 or Adobe Premier. This is a new PC that I was really
relying on doing these tasks. I can hear the video and have tried
resizing and rendering and any else I could think of but still no
preview. Any ideas?

PC:
E6600 Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz
2GB Crucial Ballistix RAM
8600GT Video
ASUS P5K-e WiFi

Is there an "overlay" versus "VMR9" option inside the applications
in question ? Try changing the setting.

See "Video rendering filters" here, for some of the terminology. The article
is a little too high level, to really help anybody. But the terms used
can be used in further Internet searches.

Are you familiar with the programmes or is this your first attempt?

I ask only because the default setting should cause any video clip
selected from the Project Window, to appear in the Source Window for
editing. I wonder if you have a video clip that is complete? Have you
viewed the clip on your computer as a seperate action or have you
captured it from camera directly into Premiere?

I have used simpler programs like Ulead video studio. The video I am
trying to edit has worked for every player I put to, but just wont
show in Premier or Vegas. I didn't do the capturing myself, its a
divx .avi file.

It'll ask to rebuild twice indices and packed bitstreams. Allow it
always and recompile (straight through streaming at no additional
encode) to a secondary file [movie1.avi > movie2.avi]. Try loading up
then.
