New PC wont launch XP. HDD?

The BIOS will launch and everything posts accordingly. After that a
screen saying "Windows did not shutdown properly..." the one that
gives the option for "last known good configuration" and safe mode,
etc. Well, when I choose any of the options the PC hangs then flashes
a blue screen with some text for less than a second and reboots. This
is a newly built system and the HDD's are from my last system. Here
are the new specs:

Mobo: Asus P5k-e/wifi-ap
CPU: E6750
GPU: Leadtek 8600GT 512MB
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2x1GB
PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Watt

My old system did not have SATA so I am connecting using an IDE cable
to my Western Digital HDD's (120&40) in Master/Slave configuration. Is
this an issue of SATA/PATA incompatibility? Or, is it b/c the drives
only work with my previous system's settings? Would one of those IDE
to SATA converter boards work? I need the info on the 120GB drive but
not the 40GB, so I can deal with wiping it and loading XP again, then
using it as the Master. Unfortunately, I can't find my OS disk, so
other options would be great until I do.

Also, I have four IDE drives (2 DVD and 2 HDD) and several SATA ports
and only one IDE on the Mobo. What would be the best option short of
buying SATA drives?

You need fresh install for new hardware! Can you start in safe mode? If
so, delete all motherboard devices from Device Manager and restart, but it
may ask for XP CD for correct drivers. Check if you have a directory called
I386, which may contain all the XP CAB files.

You need to reinstall XP. Buying SATA drives will not help.#

If you are trying to boot your old Windows XP configuration on the new
system, it probably is not working because Windows XP has all the info in
it for your old system: chipset, video, etc. You could try doing a repair
installation, instructions can be found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
or http://tinyurl.com/6l9sm

If you are only seeking to get the data off your old hard drive, you can
purchase a new SATA drive, do a clean install of XP to it and then access
your old hard drive from the IDE port long enough to copy your data off.
You could also purchase a USB enclosure for the IDE hard drive and access
it that way to retrieve your data after installing XP to a new SATA drive.

IDE conrtroller card is best. Below is an example or find one at your
favorite vendor:
