no new messages in 1 group only

Chip

I can currently post to and then read my messages in two newsgroups. So I
know my newsreader and news server are working (I assume).

However for the last three days one newsgroup (a moderated one) doesn't show
any new messages on my newsgroup reader (windows mail). It was working fine
prior to 3 days ago. I know there are new messages to this newsgroup cause I
can go to Google and read them. I can even post a message to this news group
using windows mail, and then read it on Google. However, my newsreader
doesn't get any new messages for this group.

I installed Avast antivirus program about 1 or 2 days before the problem
started. And before doing that I uninstalled a Norton antivrus program.
However, I was able to post to the moderated group (and receive messages to
this goup) the following day. It was about the 2nd day after installation of
the Avast AV program that I noticed my moderated newsgroup was showing no
new messages on my windows mail newsreader.

Turning off the Avast AV program doesn't solve my problem.

Any ideas? Seems like I'm spending alot of time trying to resolve problems
since I
bought this Dell laptop with the Vista OS.

Thanks, Chip

You are actually going to the group and seeing nothing, right?

If you uninstalled Norton one day and it wasn't turned off properly it
may be that "Something" has remained - a rule of come kind, Norton if
running when uninstalled will try to protect itself.

If you didn't reboot until the following day then whatever was left over
might be trying to block things. Can you recall if anything like that
might have happened between the time you could post and the time it
quite. Was Norton acting as firewall? It is a truly horrible piece of junk.

Usually with security software you wish to install the best method is...

Stop it running, all of it.
Reboot
MAKES SURE it has not come back to life
Uninstall
Reboot
CHECK it is truly gone
Reboot again (if you like - should not really be necessary)
Install new software before doing anything else
Reboot again, even if not told to.

Anyway is this group on the same server(s). Maybe the server(s) names
would help someone spot the problem.

Three suggestions:
First, Norton tends to leave quite a bit of troublesome debris behind
when uninstalled. Follow up with their debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Second, chances are you installed Avast using the default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select custom install, which
then allows you to unselect its troublesome email scanning module.

Third, a default newsgroup setting can cause strange behavior.
Go to Tools, Options, Read, uncheck "Get 300 headers at a time".

Did all of the above and still cannot download new messages for this one
particular newsgroup. Can download messages from the other 2 newsgroups.

I see messages dated up to July 1, and no messages since then. I can't
download new messages for this newsgroup after July 1.

Norton wasn't running when I uninstalled it. The free subscription that came
with the computer had run out and I had no antivirus protection according to
the Vista security center.
If you didn't reboot until the following day

I most likely would have rebooted immediately after uninstallation as
directed by online screen.

I didn't have a Norton firewall. I had the Windows Vista firewall.

I only have one newsgroup server.

If you have done all three of those prerequisites, then you need to
reset that newsgroup, since it was probably corrupted. Unsubscribe
from that newsgroup, restart Windows Mail, then resubscribe to that
newsgroup.

That can mean whatever newsgroups server you are connecting to have
stopped downloading it from any other servers. To check for this, add this
server to your news servers list under Windows Mail, then check if they
offer that newsgroup.

Some, but not all, newsgroups providers are willing to try fixing such a
problem if you tell them about it so they'll know someone is still trying
to read that newsgroup through their server.

There's also a possibility that Google Groups doesn't wait for the
moderator's approval before displaying posts to that newsgroup,
and the moderator is taking a break from approving any.

They are volunteers which Microsoft recognizes should have a

Well thanks for clearing those questions up, I can't add anything much
to Robert's reply and yes, the folder on your machine may have been
corrupted. worth trying unsubscribe and resubscribe as Gary suggested.

did all of the above without resolution of problem. However, another poster
to this thread suggested something that worked.

Please read my response to his post.

That can mean whatever newsgroups server you are connecting to

comcast is my news server
have
stopped downloading it from any other servers.

comcast is provided messages from Giganews.

It's my understanding that Giganews is my usenet *provider* and Comcast is
my usenet *server*
To check for this, add this
server to your news servers list under Windows Mail, then check if they
offer that newsgroup.

http://www.motzarella.org/

I have Motzarella now and am able to read the moderated group now. (the NG I
couldn't read before using the comcast news server)
Some, but not all, newsgroups providers are willing to try fixing such a
problem if you tell them about it so they'll know someone is still trying
to read that newsgroup through their server.

It's my understanding a NG provider (eg Giganews) is different than a NG
server (eg the Comcast news server).
There's also a possibility that Google Groups doesn't wait for the
moderator's approval before displaying posts to that newsgroup,

I don't think so. I think all posts pass through the moderators, or the NG
would be full of spam and trolls. They are the reason we started the
moderated group. I've read the moderated group on Google from time to time
and have never seen spam or trolls.

I'm still curious why I can't read messages to this one moderated group
using my Comcast news server, but can read messages to the group when using
the Motzarella news server.

Any ideas where the problem might lie (or lay)?

Well, at least we have absolved Windows Mail as the reason for the problem. :)

Comcast may have dropped it from their list of newsgroups to download
from Giganews. You may need to tell them you want it back on the list,
if you still want to read it from the Comcast server instead of the
Motzarella
server.

I downloaded the names of about 110,000 newsgroups from comcast. Strange
that they'd drop that one. But just my luck.

OK. I'll check out the comcast website and see if they have any forums for
questions or problems.

See if they offer any newsgroups with names starting with
comcast. - their newsgroups person may prefer newsgroups
to any other kind of forums.

I downloaded 3 updates from Microsoft today, and my problem has been
resolved. One was a patch for the Vista OS, one had something to do with
protecting my computer (I think they were aluding to Windows Defender), and
forget what the last update was for.

Don't know how my problem was resolved, but happy anyway.

Thanks to everyone who helped me.
