Seeing ONLY my own messages in newsgroups in Windows Mail

P

Paul

I recall using Outlook Express earlier to view my messages/threads in this
newsgroup. Recently I installed Vista, and finally got tired of the web
interface, so I'm reading my messages in Windows Mail. I can d/l messages
all right, and mine come out red (instead of the default black)--but there
are so many replies every day. How can I keep Windows Mail from showing me
every single reply to every single message that comes into this group? I
really only want to view mine. Thanks.

How would you like to not only read every single message in this
newsgroup, but also compose a technically accurate reply for many
of them? ;-)

If you only want to see the ones you wrote, you can sort the
messages by the author's name (click on the From column header).

Thanks for the reply. Doing that only sorts them in alphabetical (or reverse
alphabetical) order. I'd like to view only my own messages. I remember doing
this with Outlook Express, but don't recall what I did. Is there a way to
filter out/delete all messages that aren't either my posts, or replies to
threads I've started?

Try this: View, Current View, Show Replies to My Messages.
The keyboard shortcut Ctrl+H should also work.

That doesn't weed out all other messages. I would like to view only mine,
instead of having to weed through everyone's.

That's strange. Could it be that you are using a *rule* which colors
your own postings?

Do you really want to filter out everything but just your own postings?
Di you really filter away all if the replies you received for your
postings/questions?

What you want to have can easily be done by defining a view for
filtering on your own postings.

For a very long time (since early OE) I have been using the following:

a) Create a rule
- condition: message contains <myname> in the field "from";
- actions:
* mark it with the color green
* and mark as read
* and mark the message as watched
(sorry if the wording is not 100% correct, it's my translation from
German).
This rule also has the effect that all replies in my posting are marked
as "watched".

b) Create a view
View | Current View | Define Views
condition: message contains <myname> in the filed "from";
action: show
name: My stuff

By selecting the view from the drop-down list "Views" (right corner of
the tool-bar) or from the menu View | Current View you can filter for
your own stuff.

In addition I am using another view called "Watchdog" based on messages
being marked to be watched.

This way it's just a clock in the drop-down list and selecting
"Watchdog" or "My stuff" to see only what I want.

If any further question, pls ask.

Glad to hear that, Rainald. Can you give me specifics? I'm all thumbs when
it comes to Windows Mail.

OK I replied before I saw your second post. Lemme try it out and I'll report
back. Thanks for jumping into this thread.

In Outlook Express you just click in the column next to your post with the
column header that looks like glasses and it turns the thread red, then
click on that column header to sort those to stay at the top. I don't know
if there's a similar option in Windows Mail. There aught to be.

You're welcome.
Pls let us know if it works for you. (and be it with some
modifications).

Yes, this can be done in WinMail too.
But that's far from what the OP wants to achieve.

OK what I really want is to see only threads that I have started. I of
course want to see replies from other people, and not just my own postings.
What I am trying to weed out is every thread started by other people.

I did the changes that Rainald recommended, but as my instructions were
taken literally--understandably enough-- they eliminated even replies to my
own messages. I do want to see the replies that others make to my own posts,
just not every single post.

Simply marking my threads as being watched, and then controlling the view by
having those at the top, seems the simplest way around this.

Even if you took part in the discussions?

Yes, if you filter on your own postings only!

Understood.

I do not think that this would be the best solution.
What you are after will work with my suggestions for the *future* stuff.
If you apply my rule, all of your own postings will be marked.
And then any replies in *your* threads will *automatically* be marked
too.
If you then apply the view for marked items you will only see your own
threads (plus other items you did mark although they are not related to
your stuff).
And doing so you do not need extra sorting and will have the threads in
the their native order.

If you work this way, for the future do the following:
1.) Apply the rule for your own postings (colouring and marking) on the
existing things.
The result will be that all of your postings will be coloured and
marked.
2.) Set sorting to your name and manually mark all respective threads.
You'll se all of your threads coloured. So it's easy to mark them all.

If you then set the view to "Watchdog" (all marked items) you'll have
the wanted results for the past and the future things.

In part (b) where you have the OP create a View for "message
contains <myname>", won't that eliminate all messages not
containing <myname>, even ones in threads he started?

Yes it will hide everything except own postings.
This would not be the way to achieve what the OP wants.

I just mentioned it in order to show how one can easily check one's own
activities.
