No networking and Missing INTERNET GATEWAY

K

KenC

After installing XP from ME, I cannot get any networking to work. It does
get an IP address from my router, and becomes visible to the other
computers, at first. But, it cannot see any other computer, nor internet.
When I try to "repair" the connection, it times out for a couple of minutes
and fails.
In the Network Connections, there is NO "Internet Gateway" section. My other
two XP's show it just fine, any work just fine.
I tried the dial-up modem as well, and it dials and connects, but will not
access the internet.
I had two NICs, and have switched the cable (the other was unused), and have
pulled one out.
My modem card does have HPNA, which the upgrade said was not compatible (and
referenced the applet in Control Panel). I also removed the modem card to
try that, with no success.

HALP?
Thanks,
Ken

This is usually a symptom of a misconfigured 3rd party firewall, virus
scanner, VPN client etc. You might try uninstalling them if you have any
installed.

Thanks for your response.
I worked on this all weekend and (with some help, here) did get it narrowed
down to ZoneAlarm; installed, and uninstalled it, and the networking and
LAN shares are OK.
There still is the question of why "Internet Gateway" does not appear in
the Network Connections screen. But it being missing does not appear to be
much of a problem. If you have any other thoughts on this, I'd like to
hear!

Thanks,
Ken Custard.

As you've noted, it's not that important. However if you want to track it
down make sure your SSDP Discovery Service is running and that the Internet
Gateway Discover & Control Client is installed in optional components.

Ken,
The SSDP Discovery Service is running, but scheduled for "Manual" start.
Should this be "Automatic?"? If not, how does it get started?
The IGD&C Client is installed.

Thanks,
Ken Custard.

No manual is correct. Usually at this point it is some kind of firewall
interfering.
