Internet Gateway conection

Hi
I'm having a problem enabling my Internet gateway on my desktop XP. I'm connecting to the internet via a D-Link router which is connected to the WAN via a cable modem. I can run MSN messenger and download updates but when I open explorer I cannot load any web pages. Explorer is set to detect internet settings, and it was working fine until yesterday. I suspect a virus but I'm not sure how to remove it. NAV does nothing when I scan. In my network connection I see the network adaptor which is enabled and I see the Internet gateway connection which says disabled. When I double click on the internet gateway connection to enable it I see a popup window that says enabling then it says connected but the internet connection icon still says disabled. I don't understand it. I can ping the d-link and my laptop on the network but I can't browse using explorer. I also cannot login to the d-link with the browser. My laptop which is also running XP has no problems connecting to the internet via a wireless connection but my desktop is on the fritz. Has anyone experienced this problem? I appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks
Marvin
