Hi all,

I promised my niece that I'd fix the problem she is having on her family's
two computers. Somehow she has changed settings on both computers so that,
when she uses her own account, she can not get onto the Internet, send IM's,
etc.

If she uses the other user accounts that are set up on each PC -- both are
running XP home with SP2 -- there is no problem with getting on the Web.

Is there some setting that she could have inadvertently changed that is
causing this problem, and how would I fix it?

Alternately, if it would be easier to copy a profile from one of the other
"Web-enabled" user accounts, how would I go about doing this?

Thanks for your input and help.

Simple Network(ing) Troubleshooting procedure:

1.) Click Start, Run (Type) Cmd [ Enter ]

2.) Ipconfig [Enter]
a.) Verify IP doesn't start with 169. (AutoConfigure)

3.) Ping 'Gateway Address' from above
a.) Tests communication from NIC to Modem/Router
b.) Expected 0% loss of data packets

4.) Ping DSLReports.Com
a.) Tests communications from NIC to Public Internet
b.) Expected 0% loss of data packets
**DSLReports site accepts Ping traffic

If these tests pass, then the issue may lie with the Browser or
Security Software in use. Perhaps a misconfigured Proxy Server
or Firewall setting.

Check the proxy settings in control panel | Internet Options | connections ?

You could just create a new user account for her, too....and make sure it's
a limited user (not an admin!) Copy her data files to a location of your
choice (I prefer using c:\data\user1, c:\data\user2, rather than the default
profiles folders).

I would log on as the other users and open internet explorer. Click on the
tools/internet options on the menu bar. Click on the connections tab and if
any copy down the proxy settings. Then do the same on her user name and
verify that they are the same. If not, correct the differences, and close
all instances of IE and reopen.

Thanks, all, for your suggestions.

I went over there this afternoon and discovered that the user account, which
could not connect to the Web, had its security setting on the Highest level.

I set it back to Medium and all is well again.
