No more midi Sounds & Audio

This afternoon my PC is not showing the volume icon in the task bar. This
morning it was there, but when I turned on the PC this afternoon I didn't
hear the usual sounds and I noticed the volume icon in the task bar is
missing.

All audio seems to work fine except midi files, which appear to play on
Windows Media Player, but there is no sound.

I go to Control Panel/Sounds and see the Sounds & Audio Devices says that
there is 'No Audio Device'. The options on that tab are grayed out. Under
the hardware tab, everything is indicated as working.

What gives?!

HAve the same problem, yesterday morning I had the audio working
fine and all of a sudden after a reboot, no more. No speaker icon in
the task bar and control panel says "no audio device". Device manager
shows all devices working fine.

And just don't keep saying "re-install drivers" tried that twice and
even
done system restore. It probably another MS #$%@-up, what else.

do a newsgroup search and see how many folks are having this issue
since recently!

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with MS Defender Beta 2. I had
installed that on the evening of June 2. However, all was OK the morning of
June 3.

Check here:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1066427444

I checked it out --
That URL indicates a problem indicated by an error message. However, I
don't get any notice of a sound device error. Nonetheless, I'll check it
out.<

So I find that I DO have the "Plug and Play Software Enumerator" and that
URL is irrelevant in my case.

I found out what the problem is -----------

Somehow (no idea how) the Midi Music Playback Default Device was switched to
MPU-401 from Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth (check Sounds and Audio Devices
Properties/Audio tab/Midi Music Playback).

However, the Volume tab still read "No device" and was grayed out so I still
couldn't get the "Place volume icon in the task bar" to work. So, under the
Audio tab, I chose "VIA AC '97 Enhanced Audio (wave)" instead of "Modem #2
line playback" and voila -- all is now back to normal (the way it was)! No
idea what caused those settings to change!?
