No More Adobe Reader...HELP!

Hi -
I have a pre-inatalled OS [thanks, hp] and am not able to uninstall Adobe
Reader in order to update it: therefore a new install isn't possible,
either! To make things worse, cannot open .pdf files locally or from a
browser [which crashes as a result of even attempting it]. When trying
either, the Installer hangs.

Sometimes it's looking for :
msiExec.exe/I768 {AC766BA86...}

and at others:
c:\Windows\Cache\AdobeReader6.0\ENUBIG\AdobeReader6.0.msi
[in that case, all that the Cache has is Data1.cab with AcroRd32.exe and a
lot of other misc. files within it].

Tried a System Restore to go back to when I remembered my existing Ad. Rdr.
working - and it did once again - for a few days...now, nothing.

Ditto on the HELP - thanks in advance,
El.

to update adobe reader you shouldn't have to uninstall it. There is an update
option under the help menu.

Have your tried downloading the 7.0 reader and just overwriting that
installation?

Can you open Adobe Reader 6 ? If so, open it and go to Help. Select Repair.
Then try to uninstall.

If that does not work, try the Adobe forums at:

NO, it will not open.

I don't really want to register for one posting!

In regards to other replies, the INSTALLER is what is looking for the
missing files for 6.0 - even though I'm upgrading / installing a different
version - it can't find them so the process stops!

This is terribly frustrating, needless to say,

Must be.

The only suggestion that I have is to re-install Adobe Reader 6 to the same
folder. Since you appear not to have the Reader 6 installation files, check
the installation disks for some of your recent applications {or perhaps
those of a friend}. Many applications use *.pdf files for manuals and other
support files. These applications usually will have a folder with the
installation files for the Adobe Reader {just be sure you use those for
Reader 6}. Try doing a search for *.pdf files. Those in folders under
Program Files are likely applications that have the reader. If you can
borrow a copy of Acrobat 6, that CD has files for installing the Reader.

Then try the installation of Reader 7 again. You may need to go back a
cleanup/delete some residue folders.

Also, this link may help:

http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/327675.html

Also, go back the Adobe Reader download page. Select Support, Support main.
In the Search box enter- Remove. You will get a number of technical papers,
such as the one above, that may help. I do not think you need to register.

Hi -
I took Don's advice and spent some time in Adobe's support pages...
got a list of things to do in order to fully remove the 6.0 installation -
plus MSoft's Installer Clean-up Utility [or what have you].

Got the stinker out and 7.0 placed, instead - working .pdf's - golly!

Now, I'm already dreading the next System Restore or Recovery :-(

Thanks for all the tips,
El
