No media in drive error

Hi there all, I previously had problems using the default WindowsXP cd
burning tool when I wanted to burn data files onto a cd-r or cd-rw.
Basically I would sometimes get an error saying there is no media in
the drive, or it would burn the cd up until the very end and prompt an
error saying that Windows was unsucessful in creating the cd. So then I
asked somone from best buy and they said not to use Windowx XP buring
software tool because it is unstable. He then said to try googling for
a 3rd party software instead. To make a long story short, basically
thats what I did, and I was able to burn 2 cd's successfully. However,
today I got an error saying "No media in the selecteed device. Please
insert a recordable media and try again.", even though I do have a
brand spaking new cd-r disk inserted into the drive. In addition, I
have tried seaching most of the entire day looking for a way to fix
this. However, about 80% of my reasrch all said that when this happens,
it means that the driver for the cd drive is currupted and to reinstall
the driver, which I have done so, but that di not fix the problem. So I
am asking for your help if any of you know what else I could do to fix
this problem.

My specs are as follows
Sony PC with Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Sony CD-RW CRX17SE.

My personal research during the past decade regarding all kinds of CD-ROM
and DVD devices winds up with 100% hardware failures in that case. This
is especially true if there are smokers around (lens/mirror haze).

Tried another CD/DVD. may be th cd you are using is not compatible with the
SONY cd-rw. Check it's manual

So am I (heavy smoker) and that's part where my experience comes from.
There are no CD/DVD drives (burners) here lasting longer than one year
or so before going south with error messages as posted here. ;)

d-d,

you might not believe this but my cd drive lasted almost 3 years before
I first started to have this problem. I bought my computer in June of
2003, and I started having problems in Feburary 2006.

Well, my ex-wife was a heavy smoker, too and so are some of my girl
friends (one of them quit smoking recently). My son doesn't smoke either
so there is a good chance that my CD/DVD drives will survive somewhat
longer than in the past. ;)

CD drive doors that seal well, and computer case fans that blow into the
case rather than only exhaust out will also help longevity.

Well, all of the systems here (Notebooks excluded) have extra fans since
almost all the slots and bays inside are well used. Therefore, the fans
are blowing into the cases and exhaust out of the cases as well. You're
correct, this is a matter of CD/DVD drive doors that do not seal well
and this seems to apply to many or most brands.

I got my first CD-ROM drive when purchasing another new system (P-133,
Win95) in early 1996. This was a Toshiba drive (2x) and the computer was
running 24/7 for many years under the same bad conditions (heavy smoke).
I had to pay pretty much extra money for that drive and interesting
enough, it was running fine for 6 years or so until I forgot to close
the tray when leaving. When returning, I hit the open tray by accident
and that drive was gone. This was the *only* drive having a real good
quality. All following drives were rather low-cost, one of them (54x)
was not spinning anymore after one year prior to being killed by the
smoke.

All other drives went south with increasing read errors and/or media
errors while burning. There are disks available cleaning the lens and
stopping the read errors for a week or so until they return even more
frequently. These special disks do not work with burners anyway because
they do not clean the mirror. I got used to the fact that I have to
replace the CD/DVD drives rather frequently and I always have some spare
devices around since they do not cost much money.
