No Manual Update?

I have checked every option but there seems to be no obvious menu item to let
me manually check for updates to the April 2006 Windows Defender beta.
That's just unacceptable for 21st Century software. I much prefer the
previous Giant beta that had Check for Updates in the upper left hand corner
and updated the software as well.

I find it ludicrous that M$ expects users to make and run a batch file to
get their updates if they are bandwidth challenged and didn't accept the
default setting to update automatically (use my bandwidth at it's convenience
rather than mine).

I would never buy a product that didn't allow me to easily control it's
internet access for updates or any other purpose. Two thumbs down.

Hi,

you dont look well, next to the Question Mark at the top there is a
little arrow, click on that, click on About Windows Defender, new window
and there it is "Check for Updates"! ;)

Only Microsoft would be arrogant enough to HIDE this function under About....
My original comment stands...no obvious menu item.

BTW the tiny arrow and hiding functions under About both violate Microsofts
MDI specification.

I have seen an explanation for the location of the button--it's rather
arcane, and relates to standards for Windows Vista, of which Windows
Defender is an integral part.

Aside from that button, there's a default options setting to update
definitions automatically before a scheduled scan.

I can understand that the program is new to you--given that
information--does an easily accessable manual update button really seem like
a necessity?

Hi,

I think they change that in future versions.

( I Hope, Steve, this is mine 3 time that i must point people to that
little arrow!)

I'm not arguing with you--you know more about this than I do--but remember
that Windows Defender is written to Vista standards--so there may be some
changes in the spec involved.

Since you've clearly got developer knowledge, my recollection is that the
button (in Vista) has a particular shield icon on it--I can't recall for
sure the functionality of that shield--whether it relates to UAP, or
what--but a Microsoft poster mentioned that location was one of the few
places he could place the button since it needed to have that marking.

What I (very dimly, obviously!) understood this to mean was that some issue
of security context required the button to be in that location. I doubt
there are many .NET developers reading this thread, but maybe somebody with
that background and who's looked at a Vista preview version, can say this
more clearly.

A number of the departures of this app from "all other apps" arise from
Vista standards and coding practices, I believe.
