No longer hearing sound

I have been just using my monitors speakers and they have been working fine
with windows ultimate until just barely. I was just using windows looking on
the internet. I left and it had logged me off, like normal, but when I
logged back in the sound no longer worked. I have turned off the computer,
reset it, updated windows with everything that was available. I guess though
the wierdest thing is when I go into my Realtek HD audio manager I can click
a test button and I hear sound fine, but everywhere else it doesnt work.
What is going on? What do I need to do to fix this? Thank you for any
suggestions you have
 
Have you checked the sound levels for different sound sources (MIDI, Wave,
CD etc) in the Sounds option in the control panel? They may have been
turned down or muted. Just a thought.
