No login screen, but everything works in Safe-Mode

Last Friday, after trying to burn a music CD (which was unsuccessful for some reason), Windows stopped showing me the blue login screen. The computer boots normally until after the welcome screen with the scrolling status bar.

I have been able to access the computer via Safe Mode and everything seems to be fine.

I ran a virus scan and removed a Trojan virus that was found
I ran Check Disk, no problems found.
I have tried to perform a System Restore but was unsuccessful on three separate attempts. (Would like to know why it failed but that is a different problem
I have used the Windows XP cd to use the Recovery console, but after asking me for the admin password which I entered, it took me the the C:/Windows prompt. Not sure what I was supposed to do from there.
I removed the Nero Application from Safe Mode thinking that when I was trying to burn the CD, something bad happened

I think that my windows explorer is hosed but not sure how to fix it.

I would really like to be able to fix this while not having to reinstall the OS

My next step was to disable my DVD burner and my CD player to see if one of those are effecting the system

Please let me know if you have any questions and I thank you very much for any assistance you can provide

Check

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.htm

for the virus info. Look for system changes done by the virus and resolutions..

Also, in Safe Mode, check your Event Viewer (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tolls - Event Viewer) for clues

Good Luck

Always keep antivirus and spy removal applications (links on the bottom of the page) up-to-date, and scan regularly.
