no keyboard functionality after windows update

Earlier today, I brought my laptop off of stand by and was greeted with 2
messages. The first was an apparent virus threat that I was able to take care
of with AVG. The second was that I would need to restart so an automatic
update could be completed. Since the reboot, though, I’ve had zero
functionality from my keyboard. Any idea what’s going on here?

Restart and access "Safe Mode" in order to see if some software in
conflicting in regular mode.

The virus might have removed your keboard.

for what it's worth, I was able to get into safe mode using the F8 key. Is
there anything I should be looking to try in safe mode? The keyboard didn't
work.

Do you have to login? If so, and it accepts the login text, there
may be something wrong with your user profile. Try creating a
new user. If the keyboard works under a different user, your
profile is probably corrupted.

YW & thanks for your feedback.

Were you getting a Code 39 error?

I can't imagine any of those three updates causing the problem. Might you
also have install a driver update offered by Windows Update?

Did you install WinXP SP3 before or after you'd installed the three updates?

Yes, I was getting a Code 39 error. I tried disabling and enabling the
drivers. I tried uninstalling, rebooting, then getting the PC to detect new
hardware. After those attempts failed, I was starting to think I'd have to
reformat my drive.

I don't think I installed a driver. It would show in my update history,
wouldn't it? Updates (KB890830) and (KB892130) were also installed yesterday.
I don't know if all of that was before I started experiencing the troubles.

I've had SP3 since August 25 and everything has run smoothly.

You didn't reference this error in your first post.

I don't think so, no.
