No key 'beep' in Accesibility features

I am trying to help a disabled user who needs the confirmation 'beep' when a
key is pressed. But recently the sound stopped and cannot be restored
despite all other sounds (music etc) working.
The setting is accessed by
Start menu, Control Panel, Accessibility Options, Click on 'use filterkeys',
click on
'settings', click on 'Beep when keys pressed or accepted'
I have tried this on my own XP Pro PC and get no sound from the keys either
and I have checked all volumes are set and not muted.
Can anyone suggest what is wrong?

Thanks

Nigel

Eh?!

Me thinks if it disables the keyboard how can you type and get a beep? But
anyway if it disables the keyboard that's no good.
It didn't disable mine just made no sound.
