No IP address

HI

I am new to all this and I am trying something a bit different.
I have two XP Pro boxes and a Smoothwall firewall box which
provides the internet to the home LAN. The XP boxes use the
firewall as the DHCP (DHCP disabled in both XP boxes) but
are not being assigned an IP address. The addresses are
0.0.0.0 when the boxes are started. I run the network
wizard to set up a network and choose the second option
(this computer connects to the internet through another
computer) without changing any settings. After this I have
IP addresses within the range set up in the DHCP.

How do I automaticly get an IP address without having to
run the wizard after every startup?

My hunch is that you have to enable DHCP Client (service) in the XP
boxes to enable it to be a DHCP client. I didn't test this theory on my
setup by turning it off as I didn't want to break anything. Enable it
in Services and see if it will now work.

If not, then DHCP on the Smoothwall firewall is not working, I would guess.

You can always use fixed ip addresses. For a home LAN this is no big
deal and easy since only a few boxes are involved and once setup you
don't have to touch.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
